The season of CSA’s is nearly upon us. With a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) subscription, you pay an upfront fee to a local farmer for a share of the season’s harvest. This includes fresh produce and, in some cases, eggs and other animal products. These items are typically delivered on a weekly basis all summer (and sometimes throughout the year). Check out some Fair Farms partners that are offering CSA’s in your area!
Cottingham Farm (Easton)
Switching it up this year, Cottingham Farm now sells items a la carte, rather than through farm shares. They sell year-round at the farm Tuesday through Saturday. You can also find them at the St. Michael’s farmers market in Talbot County. Cottingham offers certified organic vegetables, pastured heritage eggs (organic, corn-free, and soy-free) and pastured heritage pork from animals grown on the farm on organic pasture.
Groundworks Farm (Pittsville)
Groundworks Organic Farm CSA offers it all! Produce, eggs, meat, chicken, cheese and whole farm shares. The Summer-Fall season is 20 Weeks and runs June through November. Pickup Locations include Arlington, Va., Alexandria, Va., Annapolis, Md. and on the farm, which is located in the Salisbury/Ocean City area.
Nature’s Garlic Farm (Easton)
Nature’s Garlic Farm offers both full-share and half-share CSA memberships in their all-garlic CSA. As an added benefit, they offer free shipping directly from the farm to CSA members in all 50 states. Members start with garlic scapes and fresh green garlic deliveries in May and June and then move to monthly deliveries of jumbo hardneck garlic bulb from July through December.
Nice Farms Creamery (Federalsburg)
Nice Farms does a “Friesian Club” CSA in Salisbury, Md. at the Camden Avenue Farmers Market. You can contact the farm for more information. They also sell milk at the Camden Avenue Farmers Market on Tuesdays, Historic Lewes Farmers Market on Saturdays, Anne Arundel County Farmers’ Market on Sundays, and the Kent Island Farmers’ Market on Thursdays.
Oksana’s Produce (Chestertown)
Oksana offers a 24-week CSA, running from May 16th to October 24th. You can pick a chart that includes just produce, or combine that with her delicious fermented vegetables, grass-fed, non-GMO eggs, and a mix of exotic mushrooms from King’s Mushrooms.
Priapi Gardens (Cecilton)
Along with a full CSA, Priapi Gardens offers a Seasonal CSA Choice Plan which allows customers to choose their produce each week. You can choose 6 items each week for the duration of each CSA season.
Black Bottom Farm Collective (Pasadena)
The Black Bottom Farm Collective makes buying healthy, local, and fresh food easy! Working with over 50 local and regional farms and food producers, Black Bottom is a one-stop shop for produce, meat, seafood, beverages, meat alternatives, grains, dairy, and more. The newest additions to their changing weekly menu include ready-to-eat healthy meals! Black Bottom offers home delivery and community pick up locations in Baltimore, Hanover, Pasadena, Severna Park, Arnold, Annapolis, Stevensville, Chester, Easton, and St. Michael’s. There is no upfront season cost or commitment for this year-round service, although they do offer subscription deliveries with a discount delivery fee.
Cabin Creek Heritage Farm (Upper Marlboro)
For all of you carnivores out there, this farm offers woodland park, grass-fed beef, meadow lamb, and pasture-raised poultry. These CSA shares are available year-round in 4-month “seasons”.
ECO City Farms (Riverdale)
Their CSA will begin on March 21st and extend to August 15th. A weekly share will be available for 20 of these 23 weeks, allowing 3 skip weeks throughout the season. The produce is seasonal and includes salad mixes, tomatoes, squashes, herbs, microgreens and root vegetables
Good Dog Farm (Parkton)
This customizable CSA allows you to set your produce preferences at the beginning of the season, and receive only your favorites in your box. You can swap items before you receive your box or add extra vegetables for special events or preserving the harvest. With our customizable CSA share, you can nourish yourself and your family exactly the way you want.
Grand View Farm (Forest Hill)
If you’re not up for a multi-month commitment, Grand View Farm offers a monthly farm box. It’s a mix of 100% grass fed beef, pasture raised pork, and chicken that they change up each month. The box is $120 and that includes free home delivery.
The Little Red Wagon Produce (Woodsboro)
Located in Woodsboro, Md. this 20 week CSA runs from end of May through the middle of October. You will receive a weekly share of produce including everything from radishes to strawberries. You also have the option of adding on a dozen fresh, brown eggs to your share.
Open Book Farm (Middletown)
Open Book offers a main season farm share where customers pre-pay to open an “account” with the farm. The balance can be used toward anything they sell from meat or certified organic veggies, at any time (ie, you don’t have to shop each week, or take anything you don’t want). Customers can also shop their farm store in Middletown, Md., or you visit them at the Petworth Community Market. There is no deadline for sign up.
Owls’ Nest Farm (Upper Marlboro)
Owl’s Nest offers a more traditional veggie CSA with pickups on Tuesday evenings in Bloomingdale, Brookland, Columbia Heights, and on the farm.
However, if you want something less committal, you can join their Market CSA. This super flexible option allows you to establish a debit account which you can use at the Owl’s Nest stand at the Petworth Community Market.
P.A. Bowen Farmstead & Dicot Farm (Brandywine & Waldorf)
These two farms are offering a joint CSA to satisfy all of your cheese and certified-organic veggie needs. There is a weekly share that runs mid-May through mid-November as well as a biweekly share from mid-May through mid-November. If that’s too long for you, they also have a summer only option which is a weekly share from mid-July to mid-September.
Pleasant Hill Produce (Walkersville)
Pleasant Hill Produce offers a 22 week CSA program with shares starting at $25 per week, including veggies, fruit, egg, chicken, and sauerkraut options. Pick-up locations around Frederick County include Mount Pleasant, Downtown Frederick, and Lake Linganore.
Rocklands Farm (Poolesville)
Rocklands Farms offers a year-round meat CSA which can be picked up every month at the farm. It is comprised of a rotating variety of beef, lamb, pork, chicken, and eggs. CSA members also get 10% discount off of meat and eggs in their market, as well as access to exclusive opportunities at Rocklands.
If you’re looking for something to pair with that meat CSA, Rocklands also has a Cellar Club. The Cellar Club is year-round, quarterly shipment of 3, 6, or 12 bottles of their small-batch, hand-crafted wine. Members will receive a 10% discount on wine purchases in the tasting room, 50% off of tastings, and access to exclusive opportunities at Rocklands.
Even’ Star Organic Farm (Lexington Park)
Starting in July, Even’ Star offers a high summer as well as farmers’ market option CSA. The high summer share includes pre-assembled boxes that are delivered for twelve weeks from early July through the end of September. Their summer share is about heavy boxes and the diverse bounty of great crops grown in the warmer months.The farmers’ market option is available during the warm season, and CSA members may come to the farm or the Homegrown Farm Market, both located in Lexington Park, Md. You can also find their produce at the Chevy Chase Farmers’ Market, where you can choose your own desired foods and quantities, week to week.
