Bittersweet News for Fair Farms

    January 3, 2019

Dear friends,

I’m writing to share the bittersweet news that I am stepping down as Fair Farms Campaign Manager. It has been so rewarding to see the Fair Farms movement grow into a powerful force for a new food future. Together, we have helped bring about exciting wins to build a more sustainable and equitable food and farming system in Maryland. I can’t wait to see what Fair Farms accomplishes next!

I am proud to have worked with you to get the third largest poultry company in the nation to end antibiotic overuse, help low-income families stretch their dollars further at farmers markets, encourage and help farmers to adopt practices that build soil health, and so much more.

Fair Farms is more than the small team in our office who works on the project. It’s a robust movement comprised of tens of thousands of Marylanders calling for change together with passionate partners like farmers, restaurants, non-profit organizations, grocery stores, farmers’ markets, and others who want a healthy and fair food future. It’s been such an honor to work alongside these folks.

Professionally, I will be shifting my food systems work to the national arena, serving as Communications Manager with Niman Ranch and its network of 700+ small family farmers and ranchers raising livestock humanely and sustainably. In this role, I will be working closely with the nonprofit community to continue to find opportunities to help build a better food system across the country.

I look forward to staying involved in our Fair Farms movement as a proud Marylander advocating with my elected officials and with my purchasing dollars for a new food system. You will certainly see me at my local farmers’ markets (shout out to Riverdale Park, Takoma Park, and Crossroads Farmers Markets!) and in the halls of Annapolis using my citizen voice to call for change.

Fair Farms will be looking for a new Campaign Manager so stay tuned for more details on that front. In the meantime, please feel free to be in touch with Shelby Kalm, our Outreach Coordinator, who has been with the Fair Farms campaign for the past three years. Shelby will be helping to steer the ship with the rest of our team and is always thrilled to hear from partners and friends. You can reach her at shelby@fairfarmsnow.org.

Wishing you all the best in 2019.

Warmly,
Alicia
